In defense of their country
I'm back. It took me a while to get around to writing about anything concerning this war. Everything I began to say just seemed to degenerate into cursing and pointless invective. I beg pardon from my few loyal readers, who have asked me why I abandoned my post.
Having said that, I want to ease back into writing by addressing a phrase that has been driving me absolutely apeshit since the beginning of the war. These meathead journalists of both the right and "so-called liberal media" varieties keep saying that the soldiers and Marines who are fighting and dying in Iraq are "defending their country." Fox News uses it. CNN uses it. Katie Couric and Matt Lauer have used it. The thing is, the phrase is absolutely incorrect.
There is no defense involved here, people. Not on our side. We have launched an offensive campaign into a foreign country without having been first attacked. After World War II, the Nazis tried to say that they had simply launched an attack on Poland in self-defense. Members of the Nuremberg court and American journalists pointed out that the evidence that suggested Poland was going to attack Germany was trumped up and, even if the threat had been real, Germany had no right to pre-emptively attack in self-defense. This, the court said, was not self-defense, but aggression.
Now, we are in a war that was started based on charges that UN inspectors called "garbage." We attacked without provocation. We are aggressors here.
Still, as a member of the military, I support our troops. I want them to come home safe and I know that those who lead them are not going to stop this war until it's won. The soldier's lot is not to reason why. I know that. However, while they are fighting for our country right now, they're not fighting in defense of it.
