The Cycle Continues

Al Qaeda's leader in Iraq beheaded an American civilian and vowed more killings in revenge for the 'Satanic degradation' of Iraqi prisoners by U.S. soldiers, an Islamist Web site said on Tuesday.
T a c i t u s weighs in saying to expect this. That is, the claim that the torture and abuse in Abu Ghraib were responsible for initiating this heinous act of revenge and cautions his readers not to "buy it". While I concur that like-minded terrorists have performed these executions before and will do so again, it misses the point that our acts in Abu Ghraib can be used by these people as both an excuse and a recruitment tool for anti-American sentiment and action. To dismiss the idea out of hand that this execution might not have been expedited or precipitated (if only to take advantage) by the crimes at Abu Ghraib is, to me, in error. There are still several missing persons unaccounted for in Iraq, we can only hope that this was not a sign of things to come.
