Yay! Iraq's a draw!

Ever watchful for signs of media bias, John Hinderaker thinks he's found some more today.
The top headline on Yahoo News reads: "Gates Says U.S. Losing Iraq War." ...

Only that's not what Gates said. The Associated Press story that Yahoo News links to carries the milder headline, "Gates says U.S. is not winning Iraq war." And if you read the story, you find that what Gates actually said is that "he believes the United States is neither winning nor losing, 'at this point.'"
First of all, when asked by Carl Levin the straightforward question, "Mr. Gates, do you believe that we’re currently winning in Iraq?” he answered "No, sir." Watch it at Think Progress.

Yes, later Gates did backtrack a bit and suggest that we're neither winning or losing, but doesn't Hinderaker think it's newsworthy that Bush has nominated someone who disagrees with his own stated belief (repeated by Bush's mouthpiece today) that "Absolutely, we're winning"? I certainly think it is and, oddly enough, so does that notorious liberal Matt Drudge. Click on the picture below for the full-size screenshot, where you'll see Drudge's headline reads DEFENSE SECRETARY NOMINEE GATES SAYS DOES NOT BELIEVE AMERICA IS WINNING IN IRAQ...

Hinderaker isn't a complete idiot. He knows how the media works and this is newsworthy--hell, headlineworthy. He's just hoping that his readers are idiots.
