Questions

What would you think if I wrote--about a fellow white midwesterner who disagreed with me--the following sentences:
He's self-corrupted as both an American and a white man. OK, maybe the point is that he isn't a white man.
Wouldn't your skin crawl? Wouldn't you be justified in suspecting me of the worst form of bigotry? Wouldn't you suspect I'd be the kind of guy to call someone a "n****r lover" or a "race traitor"?

And, if I said of a Jew that he was not only "self-corrupted" but "animated by greed," wouldn't Abe Foxman be right in roundly criticizing me for "summon(ing) up classic stereotypes that Jews are greedy, money-grubbing and morally deficient"?

I agree. It's despicable.

Why then is it OK when Marty Peretz does those things? I am not Jewish, but I'm really interested in understanding the rules of debate here, because Peretz's writing seems slimy to me. Am I alone in that?

Are you talking about how Biden and Byrd get a pass on being bigots?

Who has given Biden a pass? Is that why he's been prostrate in apology for the past 24 hours? Because he got knocked over by the wind of the media/bloggers rushing past and ignoring him? Give me a break.

As for Byrd, it's lovely that someone would dig up ancient crap to smear him time and time again, despite the fact he clearly had a change of heart over time. Strom Thurmond's legacy, on the other hand, was called "old news."

Does cognitive dissonance sound like a phone ringing in the distance or is there just a great whooshing sound inside your head?

prostrate? That is a great one.

Since you are always so fond of obermann look at his transcript from last night. He might as well be be on the Biden staff and the only one worse that him is Matthews but you'll just dismiss that because you think he is a republican.

By the way March 2001 is hardly ancient history.

So, answer my question: Is what Marty Peretz said wrong or not?

I am not jewish either but Peretz can say he wants. I mean he owns the magazine if you don't agree with him then don't buy the magazine. You see that is how the free market works. You have a choice as a consumer exercise it.

I know you're not Jewish, E-----, (we have history, commenters), but are you saying you only have a problem with left-leaning racists? And isn't there something odd about someone complaining about antisemitism while using antisemitic stereotypes?

I have a problem with all forms of racism and I think you or anyone has a right no a responsibility for to identify them when they occur but I also believe Marty Peretz has a right to write what he wishes in his magazine.

Frankly I think when ever somebody claims a person is not Jewish, black, Asian or even white enough they cheapen the debate to a point of name calling that eliminates any possibility of having a substantive discussion.

Just as when Rep. J.C. Watts referred to Jesse Jackson as a race hustling poverty pimp he took away from the substance of his point and anytime claims that Secretary Rice, Niger Innis, Herman Cain or Justice Clarence Thomas are not sufficiently black it robs the public of an opportunity to truly discuss solutions to racism.

Now saying this I believe that Israel has a right to exist and with that it has a responsibility to defend itself. For this reason the fact that George Soros and Norm Chomsky are Jewish does not make them less wrong. The problem with Marty Peretz argument is it removes focus away from their wrongness.

By the way my cognitive dissonance sounds like a carrousel

Yeah, I saw that. Shitty.

And when you say a carousel, do you mean the machinery or the calliope sounds?

(He's a troll, people, but I love this guy. He was calling me a bleeding heart liberal before blogs were blogs.)
