Traitors don't get to question my patriotism

... opens Bill Maher, while seated in front of an image of Bush and Cheney. Then it gets even better.

Check it out.

(Thank you, Attaturk, for posting the clip.)

I got invited backstage by Bill Maher once (he requested more ice). He's famously unpleasant, but he did something on that tour that I thought was so cool--he brought along, as his opening act, some middle-aged schoolteacher who played guitar and sang gently funny folk songs. "Gently funny" as in "not funny, but kinda cute if that's your thing, I guess."

Just some old friend he was doing a favor for. And she brought along one of her guitar-lesson students to play with on the bus. It was just really sweet, this smarmy prick with these two guile-free smalltowners in tow.

Oh, and if the guy juts out his elbow so there's a space there, he's got a gorgeous woman on his arm within a half-second. Guaranteed. I don't care if he's in the Serengeti, stuck in a locker, whatever. It's truly astounding.

It may be the case that success in television requires being (to at least some degree)unpleasant and smarmy. On the other hand, I'm more than happy with where he directed his unpleasantness here.

BTW -- thank you (belatedly) for being the first to extend your welcome to my brief tenure here!
